HOT NEWS FROM FisherMADE 2006

The FisherMADE team, headed by Martin Fisher, is sending the new 2006 version (Version 3) of our European Mapping of the Aerospace & Defence Environment (“©FisherMADE2005”) chart. It is a major update to the July 4 th 2004 version and has some significant changes to the June Paris Air Show 2005 version 2, which was not globally emailed, because we knew there would be a lot of changes.

For your ease of access, it is included as a pdf attachment to this email.

Why so long since you saw the chart? The reason for the long time since the 2004 version is that FisherMADE is now a team, not just Martin Fisher, and the team has been developing a new concept while also making all the changes to the chart. You can now download the chart@ www.fishermade.com

……………But that is but a tiny piece of FisherMADE. FisherMADE has much, much more to offer than just a paper-based chart, albeit the chart is a somewhat well broadcast and appreciated piece of paper within our aerospace and defense industry. For starters, the site has three tools/resources for our clients
•  A list of international and US company suffices (e.g., Ltda; Oy; SpA; S.A., A/S, plc) and their definitions in pdf format;…………and two AcronymFinder2006 site web-assisted acronym lists
•  A list of international acronyms (e.g., SEPI, SAGEM; BAES; SNPE; EMPORDEF) with web sites in a word document with hyperlinks active, and, probably best of all,
•  The first website-defined aerospace and defense acronyms , a 28 page list because, too often just finding out what the acronym stands for makes the reader none the wiser. This is in pdf and, hence, while web sites are listed , there are no active hyperlinks.

The active hyperlinked version is available in Word at a one time cost with license rights to use internally for FisherMADE subscribers. License to use in external products such as proposals is an additional cost. AcronymFinder2006 use for just one proposal will not only pay for itself in analyst's or engineer's time but offers your customer a unique, user-friendly capability as people read your proposal.

But, hopefully, best of all, the centerpiece of FisherMADE is a web-enabled corporate organizational chart drawing capability . This produces charts to order in a format similar to the Western Europe pdf chart. However, results of your searches are displayed in a form which enables simple download into a presentation or any other document. You can search by any permutation of:

•  Country (over 60 of them worldwide ranging from Egypt and Morocco to Argentina and Poland to Taiwan and Singapore ).

•  Legal entity Company, or Company Business Unit (“BU”) or wholly owned subsidiary

•  Any number and combination of Product/Service Coder (60 of them ranging from “Targets and Ranges” to “Amphibious Aircraft”)

However, let us go back to closer to what you know…….

What has changed in the Western European Chart?

Some of you may be familiar with last year's version of the chart while others have had no experience with it. For both categories of user, we would like to identify some general guidelines that dictate how the information is presented and clarify changes in style, content, and approach that have been made to previous versions.

Two things probably hit you immediately –1. Some of the colors have changed and, 2. There appears to be a flag in every block, whereas, before, flags were only shown where both ownership and control were vested in a country.

•  Now country colors match directly up with the web site colors . The web site's use of LOTUS notes software meant we can only use one color of text whereas the paper –based Version 1 used both black and white text. We selected white as our text color . So essentially, we had to eliminate prior pastel background colors where white text would not show up. Hence, no more yellow for Spain , and white for Sweden , Israel and the US .

•  Flag significance. The flag is a symbol of company registration/domicile ( a change from last year's version where it signified country of control ). So EADS, as a Dutch-registered NV, has the Dutch flag.

Who Gets Included in the European Chart???

Available space is the key. We used to be comfortable on A4 or 11in x 8 ½ inch paper. We now barely make it on A3 or 14 in x 11 in.

As before, companies shown on this chart version are the largest and/or most influential . Space and only space availability is the reason for exclusion . So some important European companies such as a Vosper Thorneycroft, Babcock, Zodiac, BARCO, Flabel, TERMA, Telenor, or an RDM, were regrettably excluded because we ran out of space. So while space has kept some companies from being listed, the chart is but a representation of the European marketplace, which is why we launched www.fishermade.com with a total of 60 countries and 4,000 companies and Business Units (BUs) accessible to the client.

Guideline for inclusion : The inclusion of some companies and not others may seem confusing at first, but, hopefully, it is easy to understand with the following explanation. The FisherMADE company selection process was a tradeoff between inclusion of the most significant information, space available, and ease of use for the consumer.

We ultimately decided the main goal of the chart was to demonstrate the international and interlocking relationships between companies and their interests. This became the key guideline in choosing which companies were retained and which were put to the side in Release 1 of the web site.

The web site includes many company's Business Units (BU's) which are not legal entities. The reason for this is that you do not get the true reporting and organizational structure from just legal entities. So a Thales has 120 entries accessible from the web site but only 35 on the paper-based chart .

BU's are not included in the chart version 3 pdf nor will be in future versions .

Guideline 2 for exclusion : The guideline for chart exclusion was that entities were usually often not included within the ownership structure if they were:

1. Wholly owned by the parent
2. Existed within the same country as the parent, and
3. Had no control of overseas assets.

So for example, under ThyssenKrupp , Blohm & Voss would not be included if it did not control assets abroad . In doing this, once again, we hoped to optimally use more of that precious paper real estate space for international cross border ownership on the chart.

Ownerships Changes

The changes are too numerous – and far reaching (Safran, Selex, BAE Systems reorganization) to identify so we will apologize in advance for not guiding you down the path of change since the last update as we have traditionally done.

In conclusion

The FisherMADE team is pleased about the completion of this version of our chart, but this is only the beginning. We are really excited about finding a way to give you the format you like on line and flexible with Fisher Mapping of Aerospace & Defence Environments offering new services online.

In essence, the Western European Aerospace & Defence Environment chart is a taste of what is available through our service.

As usual, your comments, corrections, and insights are always welcome. Accuracy depends on many things and currency of data is a key issue.

Now that we have made the switch to www.fishermade.com and revamped the chart entirely, we will come out with much more regular updates and, of course, keep the web site version as up to date very regularly.

Martin
